An awareness program was held by CAA for Women Consumer Activists of Colombo District on 15th September 2016 at Sarvodaya Nagarodaya centre.
Mr. Nandasiri Gamage, General Manager of SL women’s cooperative societies, Mr. A M Yoosuf, Consultant CAA, Mr. AKDDD Arandara DG. CAA, participated as chief guests and Dr. Palitha Saman Jayakody Health Education Unit- Wathupitiwala Base Hospital, Mrs. CN Thilakatartne Director-CAA, Mrs Samantha Karunaratne DD-CAA, Shakila Weerasinghe AD-CAA, conducted the awareness sessions with great success.
Anuradhapura Additional Magistrate Court Consumer Affairs Authority Versus SJ Computers Institute
This case has been filed based on a raid carried out by investigation officers of Consumer Affairs Authority of Anuradhapura District Secretariat. Therein the relevant officers had visited SJ Computers Institute and purchased an optical wheel mouse costs of Rs.450.00 and in the bill the cage for guarantee period had been crossed.
Consumer Affairs Authority has ordered the manufacturers/dealers/importers of all electric and/or electronic goods/ appliances/ accessories to give a guarantee period of at least of 6 months for electric and/or electronic goods/ appliances/ accessories as per the order No.37 published by 1726/16 of 04th October 2011 of Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka ,functioning under section 10(1)of Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
However, since the relevant seller had sold an optical wheel mouse without giving a guarantee period, consumer Affairs Authority filled a case against him at the court. Two witness in the part of Consumer Affairs Authority presented evidence and the defendant was the witness in his part to present evidence at the court. The court has taken the evidence into consideration and decided that the defendant had sold a mouse without giving a guarantee period of six months without any reasonable suspicion and decided that defendant is the convict. Accordingly, court made him an order to make a fine of Rs.3000/-
Consumer Affairs Authority Versus New Sun Trading Pvt. Ltd.
This case has been filed based on a complain received by Consumer Affairs Authority regarding defects of a Dell Laptop computer purchased from New Sun Trading Pvt. Ltd occurred during its guarantee period.
Both parties were called by Consumer Affairs Authority and conducted an investigation as per section 13(1) of the Act. As per the matters therein revealed Consumer Affairs Authority ordered the respondent to return the cost the consumer afforded to purchase the Laptop computer as per section 13(4) of Consumer Affairs Authority Act.
However, since the respondent has neglected the order Consumer Affairs Authority made a request at Colombo Magistrate court to take the said order in to action as per the section 13(6) of the Act. Accordingly, the case was on trial on 05.05.2016 and the respondent paid an amount of Rs.79, 000/- to the prejudiced party and prejudiced party returned the Laptop computer with defects to the respondent.
Consumer Affairs Authority advises consumers to be very careful when purchasing electrical equipment, bulbs and related decorative items used for decorations in celebration of Vesak Festival.
Dr. Lalith N Senaweera, The Chairman, Consumer Affairs Authority points out that it is much possible to sell electrical equipment, wires, and related items without good standard and guarantee at the time of Vesak Festival.
He advises to pay special attention on the following matters when purchasing electrical equipment and accessories for the decorations in celebration of Vesak Festival.
At the sale of all the electric or electronic equipment manufacturers, sellers, importers and suppliers shall ensure a guarantee period not less than six months from the date of selling or the date that buyer owns the good and the conditions of the guarantee certificate shall be in Sinhala, Tamil and English languages.

Consumer Affairs Authority conducted a Special Awareness Program on Good Manufacturing Process in collaboration with SLSI for all traders, caterers, suppliers of process food, persons engage in the business of mass catering and outdoor catering. This was held on 28th July at YWCA auditorium Colombo 01.
